About the event
Spend your lunch hour exploring new ideas in writing! The Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow (WCDH) is proud to present a virtual Fourth Friday Lunch and Learn writing workshop, “Your Stories Matter,” instructed by Leslie-Ann Murray. All proceeds from this workshop will benefit the WCDH scholarship fund. Established in December 2019, the fund supports emerging writers and marginalized voices by providing financial support so that they may benefit from a writing residency. Scholarships are awarded on an as-needed basis depending on availability.
The “Your Stories Matter” virtual workshop will be held on Zoom on Friday, April 23 from 12:00 to 1:00 pm CST. The Zoom link will be provided upon registration. The cost of the workshop is $25. This is sure to be a creative, engaging, and inspiring class. No previous writing experience is required, only a desire to use one’s voice as an instrument for positive change. Class size is limited to ten participants, so register early.
When was the last time you wrote a letter? More than ever, the personal letter has become a mainstay in conversing about race, immigration, identity, and other intersectionalities. Your personal stories matter because your voice is a tool to harness social, political, and cultural change for a just and equitable society. This workshop will teach writers how to use their personal stories via writing letters to create sustainable community change, write to elected officials, and remind society that the personal is political.
This short workshop will focus on setting, scene, plot structure, and narrative voice. The class will begin by reading short excerpts of published letters. Participants will then learn how to apply techniques of storytelling to nonfiction letter writing and practice those techniques using guided writing prompts. The goal of this workshop is to inspire writers to use their talent to effectively and impactfully share their stories.
