What is The Writers' Colony at Dairy Hollow?
The Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow (WCDH) is a residency program in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, where writers, songwriters, artists, and composers can retreat to focus on their craft. We provide private suites, delicious meals, and a supportive community to help fuel creativity.

Who can apply for a residency?
Residencies are open to writers of all genres, visual artists, and composers. Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to their craft and provide work samples with their application.

Application Process
How do I apply for a residency?
Visit our Residency Program page, where you’ll find the application form. Complete it with the required documents, including your work sample, project proposal, CV, resume or bio and submit it online.
What is the application fee?
The non-refundable application fee is $35. This helps cover administrative costs associated with reviewing applications.
Are scholarships available?
We are currently reconfiguring our scholarship application process to better serve WCDH writers. Updates will be available in winter 2026.
In the meantime, thank you for your patience. Our scholarship program has long helped offset residency costs for writers at every level, and we’re working to make it even stronger going forward.

What are fellowships? How are they different from a residency or scholarship application?
A fellowship at The Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow is a genre- or subject-specific writing opportunity. Writers submit work based on the fellowship’s theme, which is evaluated by a panel of judges. The judges consider several factors, including the quality of the writing, the literary merit of the project proposal, the likelihood of publication, as well as the need and quality of the proposed community outreach.
The winner of each fellowship receives an allotted amount of time at the colony free of charge, with the residency length determined by the specific fellowship. Some fellowships also include a stipend to further support the writer during their stay.
We offer 4-6 fellowships each year, each with its own theme and specific deadlines.
As a fellowship winner, writers are encouraged to give back to the community in meaningful ways. This could include hosting a workshop, facilitating a Zoom class, participating in a podcast interview, or engaging in volunteer work.
Fellowships provide a unique opportunity for writers to focus on their craft, connect with others, and contribute to the vibrant creative community at the colony.
When will I know if I’ve been accepted?
Applicants are usually notified within 2-4 weeks of submission. If there’s a delay, we’ll keep you informed.
Residency Logistics
How long can I stay?
Residency lengths range from 3 nights to three months. Extensions may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
What’s included during my stay?
Your residency includes a private suite, breakfast staples, snacks, and chef-prepared dinners six nights a week (Monday–Saturday), prepared by our in-house chef. Chef Jana carefully considers individual dietary needs, restrictions, and allergies when crafting each menu, and we ask you to share yours as part of your application.
Dinners are not provided on Sundays and certain holidays. Our fully stocked kitchen in the main building offers coffee, tea, breakfast essentials, lunch, and snacks throughout your stay, and you’re welcome to purchase your own groceries and store them there as well.
Can I bring a partner or family member?
Residencies are intended to provide a distraction-free environment, so most suites don’t accommodate additional guests. However, select suites offer double occupancy for a spouse or companion for an additional nightly fee. See our Rates & Policies page for details on which suites qualify. Special arrangements may also be considered for caregivers or collaborators.
Can I bring my pet?
We have a dedicated pet-friendly suite, which welcomes dogs for a $20/night fee, subject to availability. We’re unable to accommodate cats. Service animals are always welcome, regardless of suite.

What are the accommodations like?
Each resident is provided with a private suite, including a bedroom, workspace, and bathroom. Some suites also have a kitchenette or additional amenities.

Do we have central heat and air?
All buildings at The Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow (WCDH) are equipped with central heating and air conditioning to keep our writers comfortable year-round. Additionally, we provide small fans and space heaters upon request to ensure a cozy and personalized environment during your stay.
Community & Expectations
Will I have opportunities to interact with other residents?
Yes! While your time here is your own, we encourage communal dinners and informal gatherings to connect with fellow residents. We also send out a contact list of everyone in residency each week, so writers can stay in touch.
Do I have to participate in workshops or events?
Participation in events is entirely optional, though we sometimes host public readings or workshops that you’re welcome to join.
What’s expected of me during my residency?
We ask that residents respect the quiet environment, focus on their creative projects, and treat the facilities and fellow residents with courtesy.

The WCDH Scholarship Fund provides residencies to writers who otherwise could not afford one — because great writing shouldn’t be limited by financial barriers. Your support helps us build a scholarship treasure chest that opens doors, nurtures talent, and ensures that the Writers’ Colony remains a sanctuary for all voices, regardless of means.
